Description Assisted reproduction deals with infertility disease. Unlike other techniques of the assisted reproduction, in vitro fertilization is the most successful method for conception. Procedures of in vitro fertilization cover oocyte retrieval, in vitro fertilization of all retrieved mature oocytes, in vitro embryo development and finally single/multiple embryo implantation into the uterus of a recipient. However, embryologists and gynecologists are keen on answering the question which embryo from a batch shall be implanted to assure the highest probability of a birth of a healthy child. Standard methods based on morphology inaccurately assess embryo’s developmental potential, thus other scientific fields are engaged to provide information about embryo’s physiology. Unlike genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics, metabolomics studies actual ongoing processes in a cell/organism by determination of fluctuation of metabolites. As a result, methods for target metabolomics of human embryos were developed, validated and applied for non-invasive assessment of the developmental potential of human embryos.
