Description The political and cultural divisions of the United States in the present can best be understood in terms of persistent regional differences dating from the original settlement and spread of what have been called "cultural hearths." This regionally specific quality of the differences in question makes the difference between today's "Red" and "Blue" Americas resemble a "cold civil war."
