Description | The book deals with the life and career of John of Moravia (+ 1394), bastard son of margrave of Moravia John Henry, provost of Vyšehrad (1368–1380), bishop of Litomyšl (1380–1387), and, finally, patriarch of Aquileia (1387–1394), who was so far wrongly identified with his legitimate half-brother John Sobieslaw (+ cca 1380). The first critical biography of this “newly discovered” member of the Luxembourg family depicts his life and ecclesiastical career in the wider context of his illegitimate birth, of the Luxembourg dynasty, and Czech and Italian history. The focal point of the book is John's rule in the patriarchate of Aquileia in 1387/88–1394, based in large part on unedited sources from the archives and libraries of Friuli and Veneto. A considerable attention is also paid to John’s “second life”, that is, to the traces he left in the historical memory in the long period from the Middle Ages up to the present. |
