Description In this article the author presents shortly the history of the Varangian Guard at the imperial court in Constantinople. He also describes the origin of its members, and their duties, which revolved mainly around the physical protection of the reigning emperor. Within the frame of this description the equipment and weapons used by the Varangians are also mentioned, as well as several examples of their participation in battle.
