Description The objective of the contribution is to discover the networks of diffusion and reception of French books translated into Czech at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (1890 and 1914). We aim to find answers to the following questions: In which historical, social, political and cultural context was the translation practiced? Was there an editorial policy, a system of censorship? How was the assignment of copyright for translations regulated? Who were the main Czech publishers of French literature? What was the part reserved for titles translated from French into the Czech book market and nigh the individual publishers? What was the structure of the authors and translated works? Who were the most influential translators of French literature, what was their sociological profile and how did they acquire the knowledge of French? How to measure the interest of readers: analysis of the first editions, reissues and retranslations. We will rely on published studies, the analysis of bibliographic catalogues, and the testimonies of the main actors in translation (prefaces, memoirs, correspondence).
