| Description | Ballad of the Death of Bishop Henry, its oldest known version could be divided in traditional way in two parts - vita & miracula. Vita consists mostly from dialogues and monologues. However, nearly in the middle of the vita, there is an enigmatic, 12 verse long faunal description that has been always interpreted as description of ornaments on the bishops sledges and textiles in it. If we consider the species, their sequence, universal Christian symbolism of that time, difference in narrative and use of causative verbs, it comes out, that in fact these verses are a text in a text - rearticulation of the life of the martyr on symbolic level. |
