Description In present article the author offers short overview of the conquest of the South of Italy by the Normans which was underway during 11th Century. The Normans were one of the most warlikes mercenaries that were looking for new opportunities and lands to conquer in various parts of Europe. The birth of the Norman state in the Mezzogiorno was not linear, and they had to overcome the vested interests of the various powers in this region; namely the papacy, German-Roman emperors and Byzantine Empire. Their kingdom lasted in almost unchanged condition until the 19th Century.
