Description The paper utilises the material of the the dissertation The contrastive description of the careful pronunciation of Dutch and Czech from the perspective of the Czech speaker of Dutch; it presents a comparative description of the sound systems of Dutch and Czech. In two separate chapters, the sound inventories of the analyzed languages are examined with the aim to show differences and similarities. First the vowel inventory is discussed and then that of the consonants. On the basis of the theory, a detailed overview is given of the possible stumbling blocks, that is to say of difficult sounds for Czech speakers. In this article I analyze recordings of twenty speakers, all students from Dutch from the first year BA to the fifth year MA, and I look at the pronunciation of vowels and diphthongs based on the included example sentences.
