Description The laws of 6th and 7th century Lombard kings have been analysed with regard to women conceived as personae iuris alieni, the economic security of women in Lombard society, their protection and penalties for adultery. The article focuses on similarities in the legal status of Lombard and Roman women and assesses some paragraphs dealing with women as literary sources about the development and role of royal power in early medieval Germanic states. It also tries to solve the faida – wergeld problem and the compensation for women, which was accentuated by, for example, H. G. Gengler.
