| Description | The contribution points out the rather low level of attention paid by the researchers to the history of collecting in the antiquity. In most cases it is just summarized in few paragraphs or short chapters. The ancient written sources used in the contribution provide a wide scale of information about the collectors, their collections or individual items – artefacts, naturals, mirabilia and falsa. The sources are illustrated using examples from the works of M. Tullius Cicero, Plinius Maior, Suetonius, Cassius Dio and Valerius Maximus. |
