Description This study examines a less-known chapter in the history of art in Brno, the exhibitions of paintings by modern-age artists held in the city in 1851–1878, with the noble motto “to raise interest in contemporary visual art, to initiate contact between artists and the audience, and to inspire art lovers to acquire major works of art”. On the basis of reports from the period press, other information and preserved exhibition catalogues, the article analyses their character, describes and assesses their content and maps their influence on the building of Brno art collections focused on contemporary art. Attention is also paid to the organisers of these events, the Brno branch of the Austrian Art Association (Österreichischer Kunstverein) established at the beginning of 1851, and the Art Section (Kunstsektion) established in 1868 within the Moravian Industrial Association (Mährischer Gewerbeverein).
