Description The „Marat Icones“ sketch book with the drawings of alleged Italian artists, which Hradisko Premonstratensian and monastic painter Dionysius Strauss (1660-1720) acquired and later drew into, surprisingly contains drawings of a painter and frescoer Johann Georg Etgens (1691-1757). The five new identified drawings are linked to the fresco decoration of a monastic church of the Benedictines in Rajhrad near Brno, the wall paintings of which Etgens created from 1726 to 1729. The identification of Etgens´ five drawings raises a number of questions that ultimately lead doubts concerning the authorship of the other „Italian“ drawings in the sketch book also former hypothesis on the origin and appearance of the album.
