Description The chapter describes the development of agriculture in villages around Brno. The agricultural character of the municipalities was always restored over and over again even after major war conflicts. The events of the Thirty Years’ War influenced Brno in a fundamental way: both at the start as well as the first half of the 1640s, when the destructive presence of the Swedish army affected it three times. Although a great number of villages were almost deserted, by the end of the 17th century the damage was compensated for everywhere, and the municipalities continued to fulfil their agricultural role. The character changed under the influence of the increasingly industrializing provincial capital of Brno. The chapter is, therefore, devoted mainly to the development of farming and to traditional occupations in the municipalities that became part of the city, and great attention is paid also to the cadastres of the individual municipalities that changed beyond recognition since the peak of farming in the Brno region in the second half of the 19th century.
