| Description | The study focuses on the television studies Hustle and other thief and spy narratives employing the narrative tactics of work with illusive subworld. Through a centripetally oriented analysis of Hustle and its generalization to other works it explains how the illusive subworld becomes a constructive principle in these works. The analysis of Hustle reveals that on the general level the illusive subworlds manifests itself in the systematic work with devices of mise-en-scene and serves as an elementary narrative framework that drives the narration forward. At the same time, however, it functions as a basis for a play with other motifs - most frequently with the development of personal relations within the team. In this way the series most consistently shapes its form and differentiates itself from other enclosed narratives that rely on the tactics of illusive. This is so because the globally developed relation between two members of the team impacts in key moments the course of individual episodes. On the level of episodes, Hustle becomes a remarkably sophisticated game with editing and framing that conceal important pieces of information. The employment of such devices then becomes a means of effectuating a surprising effect at the end of each episode through final flashbacks that provide missing information. |
