Description The study deals with the Brazilian prose created in the time of the right-wing military dictatorship (1964–1985). First it offers an outline of the prosaic works published since the military coup of 1964 to the amnesty of 1979 that represented an important landmark in the political and cultural development in Brazil. It concentrates on novels and memoirs that deal with the issue of armed battle against the dictatorship and ponder over the questions of personal responsibility and involvement of the individual in time of social crisis. Then the study pays attention to the feature film O que é isso, companheiro? (dir. Bruno Barreto, 1997), based on the homonymous memoir book discussed in the previous section. Its analysis shows how the evaluation of the military regime in later periods remained (and still remains) ambivalent within the Brazilian society.
