Description Painted pottery is a significant phenomenon in the late La Tene period, and not only from the aesthetic point of view. The oppidum of Staré Hradisko provides the largest source of knowledge of this kind of pottery in Moravia. Considering the very fine character of ceramic matter and fragmentary preservation in most cases, the visual validation is insufficient. Nowadays the petroarchaeological, mineralogical-geological, geochemical and archeometric analytical methods in general have the significant use in study of pottery. From the available methods, the X-ray fluorescence analysis (pXRF) was carried out. A great advantage of the method is a possibility of multi-element non-destructive analysis of samples of all states of matter, especially fast analysis of solid samples. Using the pXRF analysis the whole artefacts without need of sampling can be examined as well. In case of pottery, this method offers a relatively accurate and quick evaluation of chemical elements of a given sample and so enable comparing selected ceramic fragments and looking for similarities between them.
