Description The author of the paper deals with the office of the tribune of the plebs and his role in the period of the Roman republic. The tribune jurisdiction was limited by Rome’s sacred city limits. However, tribune personalities and deeds had a significant effect on both, domestic and foreign policy of the whole country. In the paper, the outline is provided of how the originally plebeian protector of unprivileged Roman citizens had developed into one of the major agents setting the policies of the Roman Republic over time.
