Description The 20th century saw three revivals of Masaryks legacy from forced oblivion – after 1945, in 1968 and after 1989. However, his legacy was revived in a different social context each time. First time it was after the German occupation and the WWII fury, second time during an attempt to reform socialism and give it a human face, and third time in the restoration of democracy in a country returning to Europe. What was the nature of these revivals? Do they prove the topicality of Masarkys legacy or are they merely the result of compulsory respect to a symbol of our modern statehood and its democratic roots? It is clear why Masaryk was meant to be forgotten in non-democratic periods. But do we know what exactly has been revived? Is it Masaryk’s ideas, the results of Masaryk’s political and social activity, or the moral ideal that he represented?
