| Description | Contemplation of poetry is an important component of the artistic reflections of the Portuguese poet Miguel Torga (1907-1995). In his metaphorical poetry, he often uses mythological elements and characters. In this paper I will focus on three poems from Torga's Diary from this circle: Labyrinth, Muddy Waters and Tanthalos. The most frequently represented hero-poet is Orpheus, but also Théseus and Ulysses. Poetry represents their female counterparts: Eurydice, Ariadna and Pénelopé. These two halves, the poet and poetry, are constantly looking for each other, they can not exist without one another, but they are in constant tension. Their reunion is complicated and postponed (the poem "Labyrinth"). Tartaros, Sisyphus and Tantalos, on the other hand, represent the poet in an attempt to achieve his ideal of poetry, which is, however, elusive (the poem "Tanthalos"). Narkissos in diary reflexes and poems is primarily a desire for introspection and an artist's wish to see in his work. Narkissos, a poet who looks up in the mirror of the lake, sees his reflection in altered, muddy water. It can not be penetrated and reach the knowledge and interconnection of the subject with reflection ("Lake of the Dead"). The above-mentioned figures of ancient myths emphasize the dysphoric character of Torga's metaphysical thoughts. |
