Description This paper explores lives of servants in the town of Slavkov u Brna and the village of Křenovice in the eighteenth century. The research, which is based on the study of lists of subjects and orphan registers, shows how the gender, birthplace and father’s death influenced employment of children and youth. In general, girls were more likely to enter service, because they did not have other educational opportunities, such as apprenticeship. Although young subjects were not usually employed far from their home, some of them worked outside of the estate. The author suggests that service in Moravia was not as common as in Western Europe, but it was still an important part of the life cycle.
