Citation
Description František Bartoš (1837–1906) is one of the most important figures of forming ethnography at the end of the 19th century. His research position and the results of his work are firmly anchored and reviewed in the historiography of the field. Yet it remains a figure for us to return not only because of the professional contribution to the then-new scientific discipline but also because of his personality and the social context of the time in which he worked and in which he was also evaluated. The paper, which is the title reminds Bartoš's gloss written in his defense in 1890, is also a starting point for a more general reflection on variously conditioned interpretations of the importance of folk culture in Czech history.
