Description The paper deals with the character of “Chouan”, the counter-revolutionary insurgent of the western France in the books of Victor Hugo, Honoré de Balzac and other authors of the 19th century. It shows “alterity” of Chouan who represents the disappeared world of “Ancien régime”. After displaying of the historical context, focused on the role of the French revolution in the 19th century and on the difference between the War in the Vendée and the “Chouannerie”, the paper presents the variability of the fictional forms of Chouan: barbarian, good savage, specter of the past and exemplary man.
