Description The paper addresses the topic of so-called nontraditional students in tertiary education. We first explain why we believe it is important to discuss the topic, by referring to changes in the broader social context, specifically transformations of the traditional form of university study and transformations of individual life paths. What is the connection to nontraditional students? Who are they, or what does this label in professional literature refer to? What do we know about their motivations for entering university, how are they doing there, what outcomes do they achieve? We answer these questions based on research in literature published mainly abroad. We provide a perspective of untypical students as learning adults with a potential to significantly contribute to and enrich tertiary education.
