Citation
Description The article draws attention to the relation of the hero of the Garshin´s short story "Trus" (Coward) to war. The text of a quite complicated structure points to the contradiction which he sees in the attitude of society to death: death of a single man because of disease is a tragedy while death of thousands of soldiers in war is “normal” or even “heroism”. The hero of the story decides – drawn by the common attitude to war – to take part in it. His death by a stray bullet confirms his opinion of war as aberrant and senseless. In his diary he strives for one important right of a personality – not to surrender to common opinion but to have his own opinion, his own mind.
