Description The Jesuit Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) represents a crucial figure in the understanding of China and of the inter-religious dialogue. One of the key concepts of his mission had been the idea of Friendship, so that he published in 1601 in Beijing a treatise on friendship combining Chinese and European wisdom. The echo of this work was not only an opportunity for the literati within the Ming court to expand their knowledge of the great Western philosophers but it was also an opportunity, for other religious Jesuit brothers, to be acculturated and to establish a dialogue with great and profound intellectuals in China.
