Description This article deals with the interesting and intriguing phenomenon of so-called “black” or “bloody” books (in Latin known as acta negra maleficorum), which is connected with the area of Central Europe and mostly, with the Czech Republic, during the Late Middle Ages and early Modern era. Those black books bring to us information about trials and punishments during that time. They are definitely an amazing material for studying the history of law and history of criminality. The undoubtable importance of this kind of source is shown by the example of the Black book of city Lipník nad Bečvou.
