Description Gustav Klimt, one of the most important Viennese painters of the turn of 19th and 20th century, had visited Ravenna in 1903, there he had been confronted with the rich heritage of late antique mosaics. Few years later he has created some of the most famous paintings, shining with "mosaic" gold. Aim of this study is to demostrate and clarify Klimt's reflexion of mosaics in Ravenna and other medieval artifacts, which has been, up to now, unsufficiently studied and schematized. Through examining of this reflexion this study looks into the issue of rediscovering medieval and "byzantine" art at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
