| Description | Johann I. Joseph, the Prince of Liechtenstein (* 26 June 1760,- † 20. April 1836) was son of Franz Joseph I., the Prince of Liechtenstein and between 1805 and 1836 als the Prince of Liechtenstein. Johann Joseph chose a military career at age 21 and entered the army as a “Lieutenant“ in a cuirassier regiment. During the Austro-Turkish War he earned, in rapid succession, promotion to Major, “Oberstleutnant” and “Oberst (colonel)”. He earned renown as a good cavalry officer and was honored with the Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Maria Theresa in 1790. During the French Revolutionary Wars, he participated at Avesnes-le-Sec (1793) or at the Battle of Würzburg (1796). Soon after being promoted to General-Major in 1794 and after this action he was awarded the Commander's Cross of the Order of Maria Theresa. In the War of the Second Coalition, Liechtenstein commanded the Austrian Reserve for example at the Battle of Trebbia (1799) and at the Battle of Hohenlinden (1800). Liechtenstein was prominent in the Napoleonic Wars: At the Battle of Austerlitz (1805), the Battle of Aspern-Essling and the Battle of Wagram (1809). Johann I. The Prince of Liechtenstein signed the Peace of Bratislava (1805) and the Peace of Schönbrunn (1809). He was the 869th Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria in 1806 and the Emperor Francis II promoted him “Feldmarschall” in September 1809. The Prince of Liechtenstein was not only a soldier, but also a economost and a builder. Buildings like Rendez-vous, John's Castle, Temple of the Three Graces or Apollo Temple in Lednice–Valtice Cultural Landscape, Nové Zámky near Litovel (Olomouc District), Adamov and surroundings (Blansko District) or Liechtenstein Castle and surroundings near Maria Enzersdorf in Lower Austria are proof of that. |
