Description The article analyses the short story by Y. Chirikov "Invalidy" (The Invalids) concentrating on the sense of "invalidity, disability" of the heroes. Alhough they both were former followers of the narodniki-movement, the short story shows the loss of their life energy and of their ability to act. One of the heroes comes to a full disillusion and disappointment, both in his social and private sphere of life, the second one becomes a petty bourgeois being not able to help even his friend. Although Chirikov continues the realistic way of writing he belongs already to a new thematic way of Russian literature showing the collapse of the ideology of narodniki through an individual life story of the both heroes.
