Description The article analyses one the typical topics of the fin-de-siecle aesthetics: the statue animated or metamorphosed by the erotic impulse. Although the origin of this topic can be found in the Ancient Greek/Roman literature and mythology, the symbolist and decadent sensibility worked out the topic in an innovative way, having charged it by the exacerbated erotization, in which the instincts of Eros and Thanatos frequently coincide. The essay analyses some variants of this topic which can be found in the short-stories of António Patrício, Manuel Teixeira-Gomes, Fialho de Almeida, Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Justino de Montalvao e Aquilino Ribeiro.
