Description The article deals with the decoration of the Chinese salon, specifically the silk wallpaper that covers the walls of the salon and was also used to upholstery the sofa. They come from China, probably brought by Ferdinand Filip Coburg in 1873. The embroidery on the deep red background is flat stitches depicting children (boys) in the garden, similar motifs are applied to the borders. The depiction of little boys has a positive symbolic meaning in Chinese art and is therefore very popular. The paper further focuses on a detailed interpretation of this symbolism. It concludes with a note on the fashion of so-called Chinese interiors in the 18th and 19th centuries.
