Description The existence of more than one lexical option for the encoding of the agent in Italoromanic passive constructions has always been assumed to be the main reason for this. The existence of more than one lexical option for the encoding of agent in the passive constructions of Italo-Romanic has always been assumed as a simple fact. However, a careful analysis of the texts reveals the existence of a functional distribution, which manifests itself in a coherent, though not coherent, although not identical, in the different vernaculars. On the basis of this observation, the hypothesis that this distribution is semantic is formulated and tested. It is motivated by the type of representation of the event encoded by the two prepositions, which articulates in different forms the notion of agentivity. Against the backdrop of a theoretical approach of cognitive matrix and on the basis of a systematic examination of fourteenth-century Sicilian texts, the work presented here explores, therefore, an unprecedented aspect concerning the strategies of defocalisation, highlighting their metaphorical bases and their metaphorical bases and semantic implications.
