| Description | The Gesta Innocenti III. belong to those historical works of the Middle ages which are often quoted and well known. Despite the extensive historical research of the Gesta the identification of its anonymous authors and the problem of its datation has recently incited a big discussion within the community of historians. All the authorship and datation theories are based only upon the hypotheses without any trustworthy arguments. The historians have focused almost exclusively on the analysis of the Gesta’s content neglecting its literary features. I see the way out of this discussion in the application of the literary analysis and in the more precise work with the surviving manuscripts. Therefore, I present here the literary analysis as an research alternative which might lead us to the more accurate datation of this papal biography. |
