| Description | The study deals with the early work of the unjustly forgotten poet, novelist, and playwright František Xaver Svoboda (1860-1943), one of the leading representatives of Czech literary modernism. The chapter focuses on his first poetic works and, in the context of contemporary discussions on impressionism, examines his concept of literary landscape as "a condition of the spirit" (Henri-Frédéric Amiel). It also focuses on Svoboda´s prose Probuzení (Awakening, 1893) and contemporary critical reflection of its impressionistic motifs. |
