Description The article looks at the issue of ensuring the military defence of the towns of the Margraviate of Moravia during the Hussite Revolution. During this period, the majority of these towns remained under the control of King Sigismund and his son-in-law, Duke Albert V of Austria, who became the margrave of Moravia in 1423, but who had already acquired several Moravian towns under pledge by 1421. Mainly Austrian mercenary troops under Austrian captains were brought to Moravian towns during Albert’s rule as margrave. They provided important help for the defence of towns in conjunction with the rather small number of mercenary units hired by the towns themselves. The largest source of information concerning the Austrian mercenaries relates to Jihlava and Znojmo. This article presents a largely overlooked source which provides a basic view of an Austrian mercenary garrison in the relatively small town of Pohořelice at the end of 1425.
