Description This three-part series presents the basic theories of metaphor in analytical philosophy. This first part sheds light on the beginnings of the interaction theory in I. A. Richards, as presented in The Philosophy of Rhetorics (1936), the second part in the next issue is the now-classic presentation of interaction theory in M. Black (1954–79) and finally, part three will present a critique of D. Davidson's interaction theory and his causal theory (1978).
