Description The article sums up the history of the wars the Romans and the Samnite tribes fought with one another between the second half of the 4th and the beginning of the 3rd century B.C.E. It briefly introduces the most important sources and debated issues; it also stresses the importance of the aforementioned wars for further Roman expansion. The Roman-Latin war (340-338 B.C.E.) serves as an example of how the Roman confederacy on the Apennine Peninsula worked.
