Description Ravenna was one of the most important political, religious and cultural centers of the Roman Empire in the 5th and 6th centuries. Its buildings and mosaic decorations have always attracted the attention of antiquarians, travelers and admirers of art. With birth of art history as a scientific discipline in the 19th century, the monuments of Ravenna became a central topic of Italian historiography. The period of intense interest in Ravenna's monuments coincides remarkably with the most important moments in the modern history of the Italian state. The lecture focuses on these moments and tries to show how the monuments of one and a half millennia old can still appeal to people living in today’s world.
