Description In their literary works, writers reconsider the past through today's prism. The protagonists of contemporary novels have changed, looking to the past to rethink and understand this world, but they may not have stopped searching and need to go the next way of self-knowledge to stop and fully determine their identity. They often do not look at the place of birth that the USSR meant to many of them, but at the place of their current residence - a city that, as a living organism, influences the formation of a new citizen. For this work, we select the novels by Viktoria Amelina Dům pro Doma (2017) and Jan Kozlenko Tangier (2017), whose differences and similarity are refuted or confirmed by some stereotypes of the representatives of Lviv and Odessa. These Ukrainian cities are quite remote, but both have been marked by European culture. On the example of these works, we want to point out the complexity of understanding and finding one's identity in the territory of Ukraine, where at the end of the 20th century a large number of people found themselves in a difficult and uncertain existential position.
