Description The fact that Jean-François Lyotard's formulation of the Postmodern Condition is linked to the American continent may also have a historical basis, inscribed in the axiology of the cultural field. Witness the French-Canadian and Quebecois literature which, from its origins, is marked by hybridity, at different levels. The contribution attempts to identify some of the causes of this phenomenon - notably peripheral situation, weak structuring and non-saturation of the literary field, which favours juxtaposition of values and discursive mixing. The phenomenon is illustrated at several levels in a historical overview of the 19th and 20th centuries: characteristics of certain genres, characteristics of literary life, situations and positions of writers.
