| Description | Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum responded to last year’s 250th anniversary of the great composer’s birth with the grand exhibition project Beethoven Bewegt. They dedicated four halls on level one to this, where the curators Andreas Kügler, Jasper Sharp, Stefan Weppelmann and Andreas Zimmermann arranged, in among Beethoven memorabilia, works by eleven visual artists of many periods. Pieces by another two artists welcomed visitors even before they entered the exhibition, which ran from 29 September 2020 to 24 January 2021. Effectively correcting for the adoration of the “Beethoven phenomenon”, the curators stripped his jubilee of gala pathos and brought back the more private dimension, the notion of humanitas with which modern western civilization has so identified. |
