Description The article directs attention to a small publicistic text by M. Gorky, which the censor forbade to print in 1914. M. Gorky appeals in this text against the statements that appear in the publicistic statements of F. Sologub, A.I. Kuprin, M.P. Artsybashev and L.N. Andreev. The article compares the views of Gorky and his contemporaries, identifies the sources on which Gorky comments. M. Gorky rebukes his contemporaries in the excessive, one-sided condemnation of Germans as a people taken as a whole. Opposing their views he expresses his conviction that even in such a historical moment the Russian writer must not lose the ability to criticize his own people, its history and also vices. In the article there are also references to the texts, which became the subject of polemical speech by M. Gorky.
