| Description | The subject of the paper was a history of the connections between two great Czech composers of the first half of the 20th century – Leoš Janáček and Josef Suk. Suk was already familiar with Janáček's remarkable originality before 1900, thanks to Antonín Dvořák who drew his attention to the Amarus cantata. Years later, Suk met Janáček at a rehearsal of the Prague premiere of Jenufa. Thanks to Suk, Max Brod got to know the value of Janáček's music and helped him reach international success. Janáček's String Quartet No. 1 was written for the comission of the Czech Quartet in which Suk was the second violinist. Suk was one of the speakers at Janáček's graduation ceremony for the grant of the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa, awarded by Masaryk University in Brno. He remembered Janáček as an artist who inspired him not only with his strong originality, but also with the humane message of his works. The paper has been published on www.musicologica.cz. |
