Description The communist regime relegated the nuns to the so-called centralization monasteries in the borderlands and forbade them to take in novices. However, the social work of the nuns remained irreplaceable throughout the 40 years of the dictatorship. In 1988 they were allowed to admit novices. Through the media, state propaganda began to show the public an idealised picture of the lives of the nuns. This paper analysed newspaper articles, short TV reports and TV documentaries from the late 1980s and early 1990s and compared the image of nuns presented to the public. It pointed to mental and imaging stereotypes that persisted even after 1989.
