Description This work is devoted to the analysis of Leonid Nikolayevich Andreyev’s story “The Wall”, that tells about people struggling against all that stands on their way to “perfect and happy life”, symbolically depicted by the writer in the image of the wall. The author of this work studies what according to Andreyev prevents a person from crossing “boundary” (animal instincts of mankind; social and political oppression; narrowness of interests; individual well-being; questions about the meaning of human existence, life and death – or all of these) and whether the writer offers any of possible solutions to humanity’s quest for happiness and freedom. In addition, the work examines relationships of people behind the wall, as well as their desperately dismal life. In conclusion author of this work examine how the problem investigated by the Andreyev correlates with the context of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
