Description This paper shows how a detailed analysis of video recordings can be used in investigating collaboration among students. It focuses on how students in EFL classes employ turn-initial „and“. The data comprise video recordings of 22 upper secondary EFL lessons in Czech and Finnish schools. We have identified 47 occurrences of turn-initial „and“. Using multimodal conversation analysis, we show that students may employ „and“ for two purposes: task management and additions to established task answers.
