Description In the introduction the authors summarized basic principles of treatment with SSRI antidepressants in children and adolescents including a summary of their side effects. We reported on the case of an adolescent patient, who was originally treated with sertraline for major depressive disorder and who subsequently developed sertraline - induced rhabdomyolysis as a rare side effect of SSRI therapy. After her clinical condition improved, it was also observed that the administration of sertraline led to the development of hypomania. This observation prompted us to rediagnose her as suffering from bipolar disorder. Finally, we presented a comparison of published case reports of both pediatric and adult patients that demonstrated SSRI-induced rhabdomyolysis.
