Description The life of the founder of Buddhism is reflected in his teachings and it is therefore important to know the life trajectory of the Buddha in order to understand this oldest world universal religion. The legendary and the historical are intertwined, but there is no doubt about the historicity of Shakyamuni Buddha. Among the basic depictions of Shakyamuni Buddha is his alleged sculptural portrait, which was supposedly created during his lifetime, some two and a half thousand years ago, and is known as the so-called Sandalwood Buddha. A version of it found in areas of the spread of Tibetan Buddhism, especially in Mongolia and Russian Buryatia, is called the Zandan Zhu. The lecture explores the history of this statue and also discusses the Japanese version of the Sandalwood Buddha, known as the Seiryoji Shakka, found in Kyoto.
