Description This lecture introduces the development of Christian missions in China and the challenges facing contemporary Chinese Christians. Christianity has always been perceived as a foreign religion in China, and it is for this reason that Christians have faced many pitfalls and problems in trying to connect their religious identity (often perceived as foreign) and their local Chinese identity. This talk focuses primarily on the current situation, the status of officially sanctioned Christian groups, but also those without official status. New religious movements inspired by Christianity, which are on the list of "banned sects" in China, are also introduced.
