Description Japanese theatre is often described as an important source of inspiration for European theatre modernism and avant-garde. The performances of the first Japanese theatre artists and their reception abroad have been thoroughly studied and have become the subject of many scholarly publications. But what were the first contacts with Japanese theatre in the Czech lands like? What theatre groups were visiting our country and what was the reception of their performances? What influenced this reception and what formed the period's image of Japanese theatre. Can we talk about any specific influence of these performances on Czech theatre? And what did Jan Neruda consider to be the cause of the frequent "national belly cutting" among the Japanese, and why did the tiny Hanako had to die each time?
